Hello, welcome to TopUp Learning and welcome to your one minute lesson. Today, we are looking at two structures that are very similar but can sometimes be confusing, “stop to do” vs “stop doing”.

First of all, let’s look at the “stop to do”. “Stop to do” is when you stop one action to do another and it is formed: stop + infinitive, for example, “He stopped to eat lunch”. Was he doing something before he ate his lunch? (yes), did he stop that action? (yes), why? (to eat lunch).

Now let’s look at “stop doing”. Stop doing is when you stop an action. Stop + verb + ing. So for example, “He stopped eating lunch”. Was he eating lunch? (yes), is he eating lunch now? (no), did he top eating lunch? (yes). So the verb-ing action has stopped.
